Today, we’re diving deep into the hidden gems of Idaho's Panhandle. If you're in the Sandpoint region and looking for less-traveled spots where you and your dogs can roam free, you're in for a treat. These remote locations offer more than just beauty—they're places for peaceful reflection, off-road adventure, and some much-needed fun for your furry friends. Let’s explore Dufort Road and Gold Mountain, as well as a bonus mention of Mirror Lake. All these locations are just a short drive from Sandpoint, Idaho, and perfect for anyone wanting to escape the crowds. In this episode, we also discussed our return trip to Char Falls! Check out the details and map here!
Dufort Road: A Hidden Oasis for the Dogs (and You)
Location: Off U.S. Highway 95, between Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint
Features: Public land, forest roads, remote trails, dispersed camping
As we mentioned in our podcast, we’ve been staying near James's son's house off Dufort Road, about 20 minutes south of Sandpoint. One of our favorite spots to take the dogs is Forest Service Road 2733. If you're using navigation apps like OnX Maps or Gaia, you’ll have no trouble finding this gem. The road isn’t well-maintained, which makes it less accessible—perfect for those looking to escape crowds. It’s rocky and uneven, but the payoff is worth it.
We usually park about 10 minutes in, then let the dogs roam. The area is perfect for letting them burn off energy, and there’s a beautiful trail that offers stunning views over the surrounding region. We've spent countless weekends here, relaxing in the quiet solitude of the forest.
Quick Tip: Bring your 4x4 or a high-clearance vehicle! (We've seen Subaru Outbacks on this road, but I wouldn't recommend it.) You won’t need it for the first bit, but as the road gets rougher, it becomes a necessity. Plus, always pack in water for your dogs—the area's natural water sources, (mud puddles) can dry up in the hotter months.
Gold Mountain: Where the Skies and Mountains Views Meet the Lake

Location: Off Sagel Road, near Sandpoint
Features: Panoramic lake views, off-road trails, horseback riding, dispersed camping
Next up is Gold Mountain, a breathtaking spot east of U.S. 95. If you’re in the Sagel area, you’ll want to take Sagel Road and turn onto Sky Meadow Road, which leads you up into the mountains. This road also transforms into a forest service road (Fire Service Road 2642), and the first two miles are private, so don't be and asshole!
Gold Mountain offers incredible, sweeping views of Lake Pend Oreille, one of the largest lakes in Idaho. Whether you’re stopping at one of the many pull-offs or hiking up to the summit, the views are awe-inspiring. Wildflowers paint the landscape, and during sunset, the skies are splashed with pinks and purples.
If you're an outdoor enthusiast, the trails here are a haven. Dirt biking, four-wheeling, mountain biking, and horseback riding are all permitted. We’ve even seen families enjoying off-road adventures. And don’t forget your camera—the sunsets over Lake Pend Oreille are nothing short of magical.
Pro Tip: While this area is secluded, you’re never far from town. If you need to restock on supplies, Sandpoint is only about 20 minutes away.
Mirror Lake: A Surprise Find
Location: Near Sagle, Idaho
Features: Dog-friendly, family-oriented, campground, clear waters, boat rentals
Not far from where James has been working on a construction site is Mirror Lake, a true hidden gem. Nestled between two mountains, this small lake is a perfect spot to bring the dogs or the whole family. The crystal-clear waters, likely fed by snowmelt, offer a serene setting, and the campground is dog-friendly.
What makes Mirror Lake extra special are its family-friendly amenities. There’s a dock with a slide and a diving board, plus you can rent motorboats, paddle boards, and kayaks for a relaxing day on the water. They even have RV hookups and tent sites, making it a great option for a weekend getaway.
If you’re into camping, Mirror Lake has both traditional campgrounds and Hipcamp sites. For those unfamiliar with Hipcamp, it's essentially Airbnb for campsites, allowing you to camp on private property. The Mirror Lake Hipcamp has been voted Best in Idaho twice, so it’s definitely worth checking out if you're looking for something a bit more unique.
