Welcome back to our off-grid homestead near the Grand Canyon! After six months of traveling, we’ve returned to our cozy slice of paradise to reconnect with the land, our community, and the lifestyle we love so much.
In this post, we’ll share personal highlights from our homecoming, lessons learned, and some practical insights about off-grid living. Whether you’re here for the stories, the off-grid inspiration, or tips for visiting Northern Arizona, we’ve got you covered!
Back to Our Off-Grid Homestead
Our off-grid home is nestled about 20 miles from the Grand Canyon gate, surrounded by the stunning San Francisco Peaks. Returning here always feels magical—especially during the breathtaking sunsets.
Coming home after six months away, though, wasn’t without challenges. James had secured the house with plywood, which kept it safe but left us with a week-long project of undoing his meticulous work. Lesson learned: next time, a simple lockbox for friends and family to access the house will suffice!
Living Off-Grid with Modern Comforts
One of the highlights of returning was putting our EcoFlow solar system to the test. This incredible unit powers everything from our refrigerator to lights and even our Starlink internet. Here’s what we love about it:
Reliability: It’s the most consistent power we’ve had at home.
Versatility: It handles everything from charging devices to cooking in our Instant Pot.
Sustainability: We’re living lighter on the land while still enjoying modern conveniences.
Curious about off-grid internet? Starlink has been a game-changer for us, allowing us to work on podcasts, blogs, and stay connected even in remote locations.
Community, Adventures, and Norman’s Raven Buddies
Being home means reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. The past weeks have been full of laughter and shared moments, from an epic game night marathon with the Stuarts to birthday hikes at Shoshone Point with our friend Victoria.
Even our dog Norman has been busy forging an unlikely friendship with the local ravens. He leaves his “catches” (like pack rats) for them to feast on and spends his days chasing them around the property—a sight that warms our hearts every time.
Truck Troubles and Lessons in Adaptability
No homecoming is complete without a bit of chaos, right? Our new truck brought us home in comfort, but we quickly realized the heat wasn’t working—just in time for a snowstorm!
After some research and trial and error, we tackled the repairs ourselves, flushing the radiator and getting the heater working perfectly. It’s a reminder that off-grid living often requires a DIY mindset.
Looking Ahead: Dreams and Plans
While we’re home for now, we’re already planning future adventures. Over the next few months, we’ll explore Northern Arizona gems like Sedona, Williams, and Flagstaff, sharing the best tips and experiences through our podcast and blog.
With the upcoming release of our book, Together We Rise, and plans to expand our content, 2025 promises to be an exciting year. For now, though, we’re soaking in the beauty of being home and fine-tuning our systems to prepare for what’s next.
