Leaving Ocean Lake, WY: The Start of Our Final Leg

Our journey started at the tranquil shores of Ocean Lake in Wyoming. Known for its panoramic views, Ocean Lake was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the adventure so far. As we packed up and hit the road, the goal was clear—take the most scenic route possible, make the miles count, and cherish every moment until we reached home in the Grand Canyon.

Flaming Gorge and Dinosaur National Monument

One of our first scenic spots on the way south was the incredible Flaming Gorge area, which straddles the Wyoming-Utah border. The rugged red cliffs and deep blue waters of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir make for an unforgettable sight, especially if you’re a fan of dispersed camping and off-the-beaten-path stops. Nearby, Dinosaur National Monument (link to the official site here) adds a fascinating historical element to any drive with its rich display of fossils and sweeping views over ancient canyons. This area offers several scenic trails and campgrounds—ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in nature and prehistory.

Tip: For travelers interested in this area's scenery and history, Dinosaur National Monument offers ranger-led tours and several easy-to-moderate hikes that showcase fossil beds and scenic overlooks.

The Beauty of Highway 191

We discovered that Highway 191 is one of the best-kept secrets for road trippers seeking stunning views. Running from Bozeman, Montana, down through Yellowstone National Park and extending into Arizona, this route offers miles of scenic byways and plenty of dispersed camping options along the way. As we drove along this route through Utah, we found that Highway 191 is a true gem for anyone seeking both adventure and solitude.

Note for Road Trippers: Parts of Highway 191 pass through national forests and federally managed lands where dispersed camping is permitted, making it ideal for van-lifers and those in search of a free, scenic stopover.

A Quick Stop in Bullhead City and a New Set of Wheels

After traversing Utah’s picturesque landscapes, we landed in Bullhead City, Arizona, where we reconnected with a friend and upgraded our travel setup with a 2014 RAM 2500 truck. This spacious and powerful truck was perfect for towing our future camper trailer, adding excitement for the adventures ahead.

Local Highlight: If you’re stopping in Bullhead City, consider taking a quick drive to Lake Havasu. Known for its clear waters and iconic London Bridge, it’s a fantastic spot to stretch your legs, enjoy the scenery, or dip into the water before hitting the road again.

Home at Last: The Grand Canyon Awaits

As we pulled into our home base at the Grand Canyon, we were greeted by the familiar, breathtaking views we’ve come to love. It felt incredible to return after such a long, rewarding journey, though we were soon reminded that fall weather here can be a little unpredictable! We arrived during a late heat wave with temperatures reaching the 90s, but within a week, the first snowfall turned our surroundings into a winter wonderland.

Pro Travel Tip: Late fall is one of the best times to visit the Grand Canyon if you’re looking for fewer crowds and mild weather. However, pack for both warm days and chilly nights, as temperatures can vary dramatically.
