📌 Trailhead Location: Red Butte Trailhead, located off Forest Road 320, accessible via Highway 64.

🚙 Road Conditions: The last stretch is a dirt road, but it’s usually passable for most vehicles in dry conditions. After heavy rains, a high-clearance vehicle may be necessary.

🅿️ Parking: Free parking is available at the trailhead.

The Hike: What to Expect

🔸 Distance: 2.5 miles round trip

🔸 Elevation Gain: ~800 feet

🔸 Difficulty: Moderate (short but steep)

The trail begins with a gentle incline, winding through piñon-juniper forests before reaching a steeper ascent. The final stretch involves some rocky terrain, but the fire lookout tower at the top makes it all worthwhile.

Once at the summit, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views stretching from the Grand Canyon to the San Francisco Peaks. On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction!

Fueling Your Hike: What to Eat on the Trail

Nutrition is key to enjoying any hike, and Red Butte is no exception! Here’s what we packed to stay energized:

🥜 Protein-Packed Trail Mix: A mix of almonds, pecans, sunflower seeds, and dried fruit for a balanced energy boost.

🍎 Fresh or Dried Fruit: Apples, oranges, and dates provide natural sugars to keep us going without a crash.

🧀 Cheese & Alternative Crackers: A great combo for protein and carbs without worrying about spoilage in the Arizona heat.

🍫 Dark Chocolate or Energy Bars: A little treat for the summit that also provides antioxidants and quick energy.

💧 Hydration is Non-Negotiable: We each carried at least 2 liters of water—Arizona’s dry climate can dehydrate you faster than you think!

Sunset at Red Butte: How to Get the Best View

🌅 Arrive Early: Plan to reach the summit at least 30 minutes before sunset to soak in the full experience.

🌄 The Full Show: Many people focus only on the moment the sun dips below the horizon—but the real magic happens before and after! Watch the sky shift from deep blues to fiery oranges, and don’t rush down too soon—the afterglow is just as stunning.

🔦 Bring a Headlamp: If you stay for sunset, you’ll be hiking down in the dark. A headlamp or flashlight is essential for a safe descent.

How to Predict an Incredible Arizona Sunset

Want to catch an unforgettable sunset? Keep these tips in mind:

☀️ Dusty Days = Vibrant Colors: Dust in the air enhances the red and orange hues of the sunset. If it's been a dry, windy day, you're in for a treat!

⛈️ Storms & Monsoons: Monsoon season (June–September) creates dramatic skies. Rain clouds can reflect the sun’s glow, turning the sky into a watercolor masterpiece.

☁️ Scattered Clouds: As long as they aren’t blocking the horizon, clouds can amplify the sunset, making it even more breathtaking.

🚫 Never Give Up on a Sunset: Even if conditions don’t seem perfect, nature has a way of surprising you! Sometimes, the best colors appear after the sun has set.
