Why Bullhead City Stole Our Hearts

We’ve spent several weeks in Bullhead City and are genuinely smitten with its charm. From the beautiful desert views to the laid-back vibe and wide array of outdoor activities, this place feels like home. And it wasn’t just the scenery that caught our attention—it was the practicality of living here.

As we reflect on our experiences, we can't help but mention how Bullhead City has become a potential winter haven for us. For years, we’ve been considering purchasing a small lot where we can park our camper, perhaps add a tiny home in the future, and enjoy the warmth of the desert. The cost of land here is surprisingly affordable—some lots are priced as low as $30,000–$40,000, making it an accessible option for those looking to make a winter escape permanent.

We loved the idea of being able to stay close to the Colorado River, explore the nearby desert landscape, and still have access to amenities like parks, grocery stores, and recreational spots. Here’s why you should consider Bullhead City for your next trip or long-term stay.

What Makes Bullhead City Special?

  1. Outdoor Adventures for All

Whether you’re into fishing, hiking, boating, or even rock climbing, Bullhead City has it all. During our stay, we were amazed by how much there was to do outdoors. From a lovely public park right on the Colorado River to nearby recreational areas perfect for off-roading, this city offers plenty of options for nature lovers.

James and I were especially excited about the fishing opportunities. With striped bass in the Colorado River, it’s a dream spot for anglers. And for those into more adventurous outdoor activities, there are opportunities for dirt biking, off-roading, and even watching desert truck races. The area truly caters to all types of adventurers!

  2. Family-Friendly Parks and Recreation

Bullhead City’s parks are another highlight. The city offers numerous well-maintained public parks, some right along the river with ramadas, beach access, and plenty of space for kids and pets. We loved the huge dog park where our dogs could run free, and the family-friendly facilities made it a great place for anyone traveling with children. You can even catch a game of disc golf or basketball while soaking in the desert sun.

  3. Affordable Living in a Warm Desert Climate

If you’re considering Bullhead City as a potential base, it’s one of the most affordable places in Arizona. While areas like Phoenix and Tucson are well-known, Bullhead City is much cheaper, offering affordable housing and low-cost amenities. This makes it perfect for those looking to stretch their budget while enjoying beautiful, warm weather year-round.

Plus, with its tri-state location near Nevada and California, you’re just a short drive from Laughlin, Nevada, where you can enjoy casinos, concerts, and major events like rodeos and horse races. Needles, California, is also nearby, making it convenient for cross-state shopping and exploration.

  4. An Active Community

We met some of the friendliest people during our stay, many of whom are snowbirds from colder climates. The community is active, with plenty of activities year-round, whether it's attending concerts in Laughlin, hitting up the casinos, or joining in on outdoor festivals and races. It’s a great place to meet people while enjoying a relaxed, outdoor lifestyle.

Tips for Visiting Bullhead City

  • Getting There: Bullhead City is located about an hour from Las Vegas, Nevada, and is easily accessible from major highways. If you’re driving from Arizona, it’s a quick trip to get to this affordable, scenic destination. For those flying in, the city has its own international airport, making it even more convenient for travelers.

  • Where to Stay: There are plenty of options for campers and RVers in the area. Katherine’s Landing, located right on the Colorado River, offers easy setups for RVs and campers. It’s the perfect spot for those who want to enjoy the river and explore the surrounding desert. For those looking for a more permanent stay, you can find affordable land for sale with hookups for electricity and water.

  • Dining and Shopping: Bullhead City has a variety of grocery stores, including Walmart and Sam’s Club, so stocking up on supplies is never an issue. If you’re looking for more specialty items, Laughlin, Nevada, offers more dining options and shopping choices. You can also find all the recreational gear you need in local shops—ideal for anyone heading out for an off-grid camping trip or outdoor adventure.

Our Experience in Bullhead City

While we’ve had a fantastic time here, it hasn’t all been about the adventure. Bullhead City has given us a chance to relax, recharge, and even think about future plans. James and I have been talking more seriously about getting a small lot here to use as a winter base while continuing to travel. It’s been incredible to see how this place has evolved from an occasional stop to a location we’re seriously considering for long-term stays.

From enjoying riverside walks with our dogs to catching up with friends like Lonnie—who is recovering from a life-changing lung transplant—we’ve had a truly enriching experience. It’s all about finding that balance between adventure and peace, which Bullhead City offers in spades.

Bullhead City is a destination that often flies under the radar, but it’s the perfect spot for anyone looking for affordable living, outdoor adventure, and a relaxed atmosphere.
